As a webmaster, I do think it's kind of rude for people to be blocking ads when they're enjoying the content, but blocking their browser is certainly not the right way to respond. Obviously there are some sites that go overboard with ads - that's a design problem that should be addressed. I think there's a lot of potential in donations as a way to finance websites. Remember last year when Wikipedia put up that donation drive? They got to their goal pretty quickly. A dedicated audience and a little encouragement could result in a decent amount of donations.
