If “writer’s block” means anything, then the following might interest you. The only way to keep traffic coming to your website or weblog is to keep writing new content, but what if you run out of ideas or need a boost to come up with the next big story? The answer is very simple and is most likely in your site itself.

First, if you don’t have some sort of means of reporting traffic to your site, you might want to take care of that first. I use WordPress to power my weblog, and I use the WordPress.com Stats to view traffic information. Specifically, you need something that will tell you how people are finding your website. You need to know the search terms used to find your site in search engine results.

Now look at the keywords that are used to get to your site. Here are some of mine as an example.

You can most likely match up those searched keywords with the relevant post in my blog and see why they were sent here. Now see some more searched that were sent to my blog.

Up until yesterday, I didn’t have a post that would match up with that set of keywords. I had no blog entry that explained how to convert a video to images, but I do now, because I saw that the search engines were already sending people over here that wanted that information.

The key is to look in your searched phrases for searches that are not explained in your blog. By seeing that, you know that people are actively seeking it, and if you write about it, people will find it.

I recently serviced a Dell Inspiron 1150 laptop. It suffered lightning damage, and as I was looking at the power pack, I noticed something quote dangerous that could shock an unsuspecting victim.

Have a look at the pics I took of the power pack below:

Picture #2 shows the cord to be concerned about. Normally, it is connected to the power pack like it is in picture #1, but if you disconnect it from the pack, you would notice that you have a male to male cord – that’s bad. If you take that cord alone, and plug that into a wall outlet, that other end will become live and any contact with that live end will result in a nice jolt. I have no problems with Dell in general, but it looks like somebody screwed up when this was in production.

My other favorite thing to do besides programming and computers would be watching the weather. Over the last couple seasons, I have gone storm chasing with a couple friends. One of them is studying to be a meteorologist, and we’ve been able to track down and catch storms pretty well. Although we have yet to see a tornado, we have ran into pretty much everything else including high winds, hail, lightning, and very heavy rain.

[local /wp-content/uploads/2007/07/chase_2007-06-07_tl1.flv nolink]

This video was from our last chase up around the Rockford, IL on June 7, 2007. We were hoping this storm was going to produce something, but it never did. This was the first time we did a time lapse video, so yes, that is us in the shot forgetting that the camera is still rolling. The was the first storm we tracked down. We deployed at a wonderful place with a great view for miles. As you can see in the video, we were able to watch that storm for quite some time.

After that storm passed, we dropped a few miles south because the next storm was going to cross over right over us if we didn’t move. We saw a wall cloud similar to the one in the footage, but it didn’t look that impressive, so we didn’t film it. We were sitting in the car when we realized it was still going to pass overhead even though we thought we were out of the way. Still this second storm didn’t seem that threatening so we stayed. We only got a few bursts of rain and possibly a funnel cloud out of that one.

I also added a second video that is a little slower, and thus, longer.

This was something I wrote up for a class. I thought it was worth posting in here. In a nutshell, I do believe that violent video games affect children, and I also believe that it is the parent’s responsibility to moderate this activity.

I don’t believe that the video games should be the only thing to blame on violence in children which includes but is not limited to school shootings. I believe parents would be the primary blame. According to http://www.askdrsears.com/html/10/T101200.asp, parents do not regulate video game play as much as they regulate movies. Furthermore, they go on to say that violent game play can be worse than violent movies because they are interactive.

In this case, I don’t think it’s the government’s job to regulate game play to children. It is the responsibility of the parent. Since most parents aren’t from the gaming generation, most are naive about the games and the mature content they contain. I believe the most effective way to control this is to educate the parents. I’m sure most people have seen commercials for http://www.thetvboss.org/. This site is an educational site on how to block desired rated shows from being shown on their TV. This is one step in the right direction.

On a side note, I also found an article at http://www.chuckhawks.com/video_violence.htm that was apparently written by a 17-year-old. This guy played violent games and claims they don’t affect him, yet the whole article has a sense of negativity, and he concludes the article by saying “you can have my video games when you pry them from my cold dead hands.” Does his tone match the point he’s trying to make? I think not.
